In her collegiate and professional life, Debbie (she/her) is a public health doctoral student in her home state of California. She’s devoted the last 15 years to social justice issues and is passionate about advocating for women’s rights, gender equity, and access to reproductive health care. She’s also proudly obsessed with all things event planning and hosting, especially when it’s for a well-themed party.
When Debbie was accepted to her doctorate program in 2019, she hosted a “Back-to-School Shower” party complete with a school supply registry on her invite. Heading back to school was a significant milestone for her. While it didn’t fit into societal norms of celebrations at her age, which includes engagement parties and baby showers, she sure as hell still wanted to celebrate this milestone. She certainly worked her ass off for it!
Debbie was tired of feeling like her personal accomplishments were overshadowed by questions surrounding her timing on the traditional ones society expected her to be celebrating instead.
Why wasn’t it socially acceptable to celebrate traveling outside the country solo for the first time? Or having a party for standing up for yourself to leave a toxic relationship (job or person!)? What if you could shamelessly throw your BFF a “filing for divorce” party? Or what if you could shamelessly host a “welcome period party” for your daughter’s first period? Or gather close loved ones in a special ceremony for starting mental health therapy? Instead of overlooking events like these, Debbie believed it was time to transform the narrative. While weddings and babies are certainly a cause for celebration, they shouldn’t be the ONLY cause for women to celebrate.
And with that, Party Positivity was born!
A women’s empower-preneur, Debbie’s on a mission to slay the stereotypes of womanhood – one party at a time.
Debbie started this movement to inspire every femme warrior from all walks of life to throw party positive events for the celebrations THEY find worthy! She believes representation is important and that young girls need to see a rich blend of womanhood milestones celebrated; otherwise, future generations may not aspire to diverse paths of success and accomplishment.
As a woman of color, it’s an odds-defying opportunity for Debbie to reimagine the party supply industry to be more inclusive. It was time the celebration industry served its diverse consumer audience through a movement that touches on feminism, liberation, empowerment, and freedom of expression with a twist of light-heartedness, humor, and festivity. And Debbie was ready to take the lead.
Her vision? To leave behind a legacy that changes lives in a positive way.
